Yes, I blew my yearly bonus!
11.30.03 (8:32 am)

Previously I walked away from a 2nd hand Canon EOS (100) camera...well, I walked back and blew my yearly bonus on it. Hey, bargains are hard to come by plus I am a natural sucker for bargains. Plus I knew that this camera was a gem, thank God for reviews. Tip: before buying anything 1st hand or 2nd do check the reviews - to limit your disappointment and also to get a price range.
Anyway, it cost me RM950 for the camera and a 28-105mm lens (brand new lens:RM920). Throw in a bag and some cheapo film, I finally spent RM1030. And all that with permission from my darling wifey. :D
Now, what should you always ask for when buying 2nd hand electronic goods?
"Where's the manual dude?" - short pause - "Manual? What manual?" - reply from smiling shop owner. {Damn, you mean I should figure out these buttons by myself} - bubble thought from suckered amoeba brained buyer. {Up yours dude} - bubble thought from giggling shop owner who is fingering your hard earn money.
Ok, I walked away without a manual for this gem of a camera - but I came across this beauty of an online manual for the Canon EOS 100.
When looking for bargains (objectzero tips?!!?) - cross-reference what you gain from your fact-finding expedition with what the shop owner knows. If the shop owner cannot concur or give an opinion on what you've read or heard concerning the product - LEAVE the shop. You do not want to buy from a NO-BRAINER lest you become one when you buy it. Trust me, you be safe buying from those who know what they are selling.

There goes the yearly bonus
11.27.03 (1:30 am)
I am sitting here in this dark, some what out of the way, cyber-cafe on the island of Penang. Here on my yearly pilgrimage to my mum-in-laws. My better half is at home sleeping and I've got the whole afternoon to myself. Yes, friends "all by myself"..... sometimes you need quality time on your own.
I have been looking out for some 2nd hand cameras, came across a Canon EOS with zoom lens for Rm1300. I walk away so that I dont blow my yearly bonus on that. Instead I bought myself an Olympus xD 128MB card for RM200. If you dont know what I am talking about then take a short course on digital photography here.
I'll be in Hatyai - Thailand next week. Will be there for two nights with wifey and friends. Preparing for some major photo taking when I am there. I'll post them on my photoblog when I'm back.

Poor fellow
11.23.03 (9:37 pm)
An appeals court in New Jersey is hot and bothered over a $3 million award to a man who endured a three-day erection following penile treatments by the Male Sexual Dysfunction Institute in Chicago. Joseph Tomaino, who had to have surgery to terminate the erection, sued the institute. The court ordered the payment cut, saying the size of the award "shocked the court's conscience" since Tomaino, while unable to perform sexually, could still work and enjoy social activities. When Superior Court Judge Alexander Lehrer reduced the award by only one penny, the appellate panel directed a different judge to further shrink the award. Tomaino's lawyer plans to take the case to the Supreme Court. "You have a young man who is deformed for the rest of his life," he said. From : Wired.com
Obviously, he never took up those Viagra offers he got in his email.

Cheapo :: National Sports Council
11.21.03 (8:50 pm)
The national women bowlers – the world champions – were left appalled and shocked yesterday when the National Sports Council (NSC) announced their rewards for winning the team gold medal in the World Championships.
Instead of the expected RM80,000 – the NSC incentive for world class events – the bowlers were told that they would get only RM24,000.
The NSC handed out RM4,400 each to the six- woman team - Shalin Zulkifli, Sarah Yap, Wendy Chai, Sharon Chai and Choy Poh Lai and reserve Lai Kin Ngoh – during yesterday’s flag-handing ceremony for the Malaysian contingent to the Vietnam SEA Games. .............
Shalin had more reason to show her disbelief. “I was a medallist in the last two World Championships. In 1995 in Reno, I won a silver in the trios (with Lisa Kwan and Lydia Kwah) and NSC gave us RM40,000 as incentive.
“In Abu Dhabi (1999), I won three silver medals and I received RM100,000. Naturally, I expected the same calculations to be used. I was surprised when we got just RM4,400.” [+]
 WOI!!! National Sports Council - cheapo habis. Un-employed nobody who swims the english channel one time ...ONE time only gets a Datuk-ship. Our ladies in the bowling squad wins tournaments on the international level at a regular basis gets chicken feed. Only in BolehLand the butt-swipers get the glory and the hard workers get dirt.

Catch the "hacker"...CRACKER lah
11.21.03 (8:39 pm)
A Malaysian company said it would launch in January a "Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator" (CHFI) programme aimed at using computer forensics to track down and catch hackers.
The programme will teach the necessary skills needed to identify a "cyber" intruder's footprints and properly gather evidence to prosecute in a court of law, Wordware (M) Sdn Bhd said in a statement. [+]
Good for Wordware (M) Sdn Bhd, tell the whole world what you'll be teaching and you know what? By the time the participants leave the training room with the Malaysia Boleh spirit to catch CRACKERS, they (the CRACKERS) will be steps ahead. Shouldn't you at least not mention what you'll be teaching the participants, duh?

SMS Spam
11.21.03 (10:44 am)
 Come-on spam is spam even if it is called advertising. Wired magazine reported that advertisers are now turning to sms messages to carry their messages to the consumer. Cell phones as advertising boards? Come-on, I'm having trouble keeping track of my telco's bezillion freebee offers not to mention the endless offer for viagra that I get in my own company email. Like I need it...hello when it's time to rest that fella down there it will restlah. God intended that life be more than just sex.
In reality spamming cell phones may actually stop people from using cell-phones all together. That would really be bad for business.
Hey, read the fine print. You'll be paying for the spam even if you don't like it. Read the article.

And the winner is ... Georgia
11.21.03 (12:32 am)
Locally, health workers say they are seeing more and more patients with first-time sexually transmitted diseases -- blamed on unprotected sex, drug abuse and the misperception that AIDS is no longer a fatal disease. Such high-risk behavior was likely set off by development of "drug cocktails," which made AIDS a more manageable, chronic disease, instead of an automatic death sentence. [+]
Hmmmm...misconception that AIDS is not dangerous?

Gremlins in the machine
11.19.03 (8:16 pm)
 There are gremlins in the network. I am getting really frustrated at work cause I have slow access to the internet. How can a web-developer survive without a good realiable internet connection. I get faster speeds from home!
Anyway, was walking about looking for bread for my craving other half, when lo and behold what do I see....a Canon 300D Digital SLR selling for RM3999 inclusive of lens. Now, if you can't afford the Olympus E-1 you might want to consider this babe of a camera. Now, Canon also has the EOS Digital Rebel system which the Canon 300D is part of. The system allows you to use existing canon lens which cuts the price of upgrading for existing Canon users. Unlike the Olympus E-1 which requires specific 4/3 lens for its system.
...i'm sticking to my olympus...hehehehe

Bad Connection Speed
11.19.03 (2:55 am)
 Even after office hours I still get bad connection speed. What is going on here...is this a sign that malaysians are working harder into the evening? Ignoring the fact that they have to be home by 4pm? Why can't they just go home on time (4pm) and leave us internet junkies to surf in peace....or is our mega-mono-isp provider really doing its job? Everyone is pissed off by them and everyone has an opinion but no-action.
Nah, I give you RM5 go buy fuel and burn down their office.

Early Morning Panic
11.18.03 (9:42 pm)
 Screwed up with my organizations website this morning. I mistakenly deleted all images from the image directory. Must admit that it was my mistake...well it was a mistake for only 10 minutes. Had the images uploaded again in record time.
To err is human. We hear this all the time especially among Malaysians. But what if you keep on err-ing? Malaysians seem to be hiding behind this cliche whenever we make a mistake regardless of the magnitude of damage it does. We screw up the education system..opps To err is human, the police force arrest the wrong guy...opps To err is human, we run over the poor fellow who crosses the street...opps To err is human for both parties (he obviously did not see the overhead bridge and he was driving way above speed limit). When will we break free from the vicious circle of lying to ourselves?
I'm not touching the image folder again...

Handphone
11.18.03 (12:22 am)
Handphones...hm, in this year alone I have changed three times. The handphone shop-keeper is my siamese twin. Personally, I have contributed to the fact that he can now afford that brand new car. (Sigh)
Well, I will be changing my handphone yet again in an effort to catch up with the advancement of tele-communication. Plus the fact that I can't stand it if my buddies run around with the latest toy while I have the stone-age stone tool of a communication tool. Handphones are no longe for communication but rather it symbolises your place in the social structure. YOu have the executives (plain silver coloured phones), the kiddies (bright coloured, karaoke functions) and just plain lamers (cheapo RM300 phones) - like me.
Don't worry, this month I am moving up the social ladder - as if anyone cares.

Running on batteries
11.17.03 (11:02 pm)
An attempt to express myself in the virtual world. In turn I hope to learn something from this experience of sharing my thoughts with those who care to read the rantings of a neurotic rambler.
What is my theme for this blog? I have no idea, just a chance to make some noise in the void of virtual space. We are all animated objects floating around in this void waiting to touch base with someone that actually understands what we are trying to say. At times this takes us into areas that either teach us or merely remind us that we are carbon based creatures.
