KLIA is boring
02.27.04 (5:12 pm)
Finally touch home soil. So happy to be home, wifey happier. Anyway, she has no complains for PS2 (the glee in her eye over Tekkan 4). Come this end of June (confinement period), I believe she'll lord over the console. I might not have a chance at all...

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is dead boring! I heard somewhere that though it is one of the most modern airports in the region it was voted the most boring.

Another Malaysia Boleh attempt at being the most boring airport in the world? I believe they are heading in the right direction.

For starter, acres of EMPTY space. Yup, empty space!

Could it be that the architects wanted a zen experience for the weary traveller? Empty space to emphasize emptiness of mind, the futility of daily living and the quest for quietness of spirit.

Well it didn't work for me. I was more akin to a lost, tired, bad tempered, bored pilgrim who had a RM5 stero-foam cup teh-tarik and aching feet. If only they could provide public-access tv, then I could plug-in the PS2 I was lugging around.

It seems activity is confined to the check-in counters and the entry points. In that regard KLIA is akin to a big bus terminal. Buy a ticket and board the bus. This is fine for those who are just-in-time passengers but for those of us who have to sit-in for 2 hours of non-activity, not good.

Even non-activity brings about an un-welcome sight. If you stand around long enough you'd be approached by some guy selling calendars. Direct-sellers have landed in KLIA.

I didn't mind the cute lady pegging perfume to me (they pay rent) but a guy who acts as if he's my long lost relative from Ulu Kapit (some rural place in Malaysia); shoving a calendar at me, not good.

The guy that came up to me was rudely sent packing, I was not in a good mood. Are we going to see a high-class version of Petaling Street in KLIA? Come to think of it, a Petaling Street style street market would make the dull atmosphere more lively....hmmmm

I remember an experience at an airport in rural Sarawak, Malaysia that was interesting due to the fact that some guy was transporting his chickens on the plane. That was a chatting moment for the passengers, suddenly strangers were friends and waiting became enjoyable.

I weighed my luggage, he weighed his chickens...

Brain dead
02.25.04 (2:48 am)
:?: I survived! What is worst than sitting in a seminar, shivering to death and practically half asleep...having your toe-nails pulled out with tweezers? I had to sit from 8.30am to 5.30pm listening to various ones giving advice on website management. At least this seminar gave me a reason to come to the capital to makan angin sikit (eat air a bit).

I finally got myself a PS2 on the reason that my wifey will be dead bored when she is in confinement (after giving birth) so at least she can relax while playing Tekkan 4....hehehehe actually hubby will stay home more often.

Ladies, if you want your hubby to stay home buy him a PS2 and play games with him. In every man there is a boy who still likes playing computer games....

Observation of a couch potato
02.23.04 (3:22 pm)
Back from a trip yesterday and going on another one at noon today. I need a long holiday....

I'm seeing much election hype drumming away on tv. Patriotic songs are resonating over the air-waves. Funny that most of the time you don't actually hear them.

These songs are peppered with images of development and ministers having meetings planning the progress of the country. The general public gets reminded that they have voted in a government that has done so much in just about 30 seconds of rolling celluloid.

Heck, more money will be pumped or promised for development projects during this period then any other time for the passed 5 years.

I don't hate the gomen, just that I find these things rather funny....

The Diary of an exhausted System Analyst
02.19.04 (2:12 am)
:( Another day of fighting gremlins. This time they screwed up all my php scripts on the new server. Nothing seems to be going right this week. Yesterday, in an effort to block gremlins some system administrator locked out the world from the company website.

It was probably the most secure public website in Malaysia. Upon reaching the site you'll be prompted for a login and password.

They've fixed that now. After that, the DNS got screwed. Accessing my server via the browser requires ip addeys. Screamed at them late this afternoon...they'll look into it.

I'm going home to play another round of Red Alert 2....

Back again
02.17.04 (3:34 am)
 Finally finished two days worth of work. Back-logged due to network problems at office.

Not getting enough sleep which explains my lactagic nature at work. You could catch me sleeping at my desk during lunch time. I am considering bringing in my sleeping bag so I can get some shut eye under my desk. In that case I don't think I'll take 5 but rather take till work-day-end.

My wifey (occasionaly) wakes me up cause baby kicked her. Yup, I'm buying football boots, a ball and we'll migrate to Manchester and I'll enroll my little one at the football academy.

What's in a name?
02.11.04 (3:29 am)
:D Will be away for tomorrow and friday. Love it when I can step out of the office for a while. One of my duties is training people to use technology in their teaching-learning practices. Basically I train lecturers on how to use online systems for teaching their courses. Its tiring at times but you feel good inside knowing that you've helped another human being.

Wifey is five months on now and we still haven't finalise the name for our first born. Any ideas?

The very reason why sometimes I'm happy I can't swim.

I'm in the wrong business.

The aliens aren't on Mars.

If this runs on Mangosoft then it might get the blue screen of death.

Shoot the builder
02.09.04 (11:55 pm)
 Gremlins are back. Only this time they got smarter. For some reason the architect of the organisation that I work in lacks common sense.

Why on earth does the server room/network centre suffer from black-outs? Shouldn't the centre have back-up power coming from an independant source? Or is this a mere over-sight during the planning phase or a plot for world domination orchestrated by human cloned gremlins?

:? Looking at my cash-flow for this month, crap I'm in the red. Well, just enough to fend of the bill-collector and to keep myself from going on a bread and water diet.

Haiya, no money problem, more money problem....

Bad humming in ear..
02.05.04 (10:02 pm)
8) This past week I have been upgrading the audio stuff in my car.

Last Saturday I upgraded from a cassette player (yes, i was born in the stone age) to a single disc SONY player. Cute little thing that booms out decibles by the bucket load.

After I fixed the battery and fuse-box problem on Monday morning. I cheered myself and my wifey up by buying her a CD player and adding two speakers and a power amp for myself (SONY Xplods). The sound was great for a partially deaf-in-the-right ear guy like me but the whole thing lack just one component. A SUB-WOOFER.

Now, I drive one of those compact cars (Perodua Kenari). First impression, on looking at this car is that it'll topple over at corners under speeds of 60KM or more. But this dinky creature can hold water better than Janet Jackson's bra did for her.

Anyway, it was a choice between the 12 inch SONY Xplod or 10 inch. Well, in view that I needed boot-space and not to injure (further) my right ear-drum, I opted for the 10 inch. So, yesterday got myself the subwoofer system for roughly RM400. Overall, the cost of my in-car audio system came to about RM1500++

So, now I spend more time in my car then I do elsewhere. Fuel consumption budget has gone up, mileage has increase and I keep driving round in circles....

I quite happy with what I've done with the car. Next on the list is a power-amp for the speakers. After that probably I see if I can fit in a couch, playstation, satelite dish....

An internet junkies diary
02.04.04 (5:32 pm)
 The gremlins are quiet this morning. It's strange but when I looked out my trench today I was caught by surprise at the stillness of it all. In the back of my mind I know this is just the calm before the storm but I can't help appreciating the lull in the battle.

Got over a slight fever last night.

It's nice to have fellow blog-writers drop in. Dropping off comments that liven up the rather gloomy atmosphere.

Until the next worm comes along, get a Mac.

Until the next battle.END

Headache
02.04.04 (1:05 am)
 The gremlins have retreated. They seem to be active from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Retreating into the cars of un-suspecting co-workers. They choose to play havoc among battery cables and fuse boxes as night falls.

I'm sitting in my hole, wondering if tomorrow will be the same. Will we have to patiently bare the pain of time-outs and error 404s. Will we ever be able to cruise the digital T1 wave or are we relegated to 12K dial up faucet?

Damn, my hand is shaking. Haven't had my dose of mouse clicks, probably have to increase the dosage. My normal 8 hour dose has been reduced to a mere 2-3 hours. I have to make up the balance at home.

Wonder how my fellow administrators are doing? Last night they had a tough night reviving the DNS server. All entries went missing, they were rebuilding them when I pop into their hole.

Email is up but a bloody worm has joined the gremlins. Vent on taking out Mangosoft, this worm is catapulting itself via our network. I'm wondering how long email will take it as this parasite moves through it's bowels.

Well, I've got a headache....to be continued

Yawn...
02.03.04 (7:49 pm)
 Gremlins are in the network. Eating up band-width and frying network cards by the dozen. They overload the DNS with request for coffee and warm milk. The gateway is barely able to handle the amount of traffic cruising through and the lease lines are emitting a glowing red hue.

Fellow system administrators are calling out for medical assistance. The don't know how long they can keep up with this barrage of bits and bytes. Weary eyed and exhausted they labour on. It reminds one of the trench war-fare of WWI.

The enemy rumbles on, we can't see it but we can hear them, we can feel their presense in the network, we can hear them talk.....to be continued.

Band-aid to the rescue
02.03.04 (4:49 am)
8) One of my fingers is stuck in a band-aid. Keep getting those irritating cuts in between the nail and flesh.

My car has stop giving me problems, maybe it heard my threat to go out and get myself a bullock cart. I swear that car has gremlins hiding inside.

Office network went screwy again today, nothing could be worse for an internet junkie like me. The gremlins have multiplied and jumped from my car into the network faster than the rate of bird flu infection. My trembling has some-what lessen since I've starting writing this blog entry.

At least you would have more luck then this guy.

There are more cases of rape appearing in the papers. There is talk of castrating the offenders. This is currently being considered by the government. I say just burn the beasts.

I'm not a fan but this guy is one screwed dude. This dude was this dumb.

Weichun should take part in this charity event.

The truth is strange
02.02.04 (3:21 am)
 What a weekend for me. Car went dead, spent another RM200 on repairs...really thinking of changing my mode of transportation to a horse or a bullock cart. At least I don't have to worry about dead batteries and blown out fuses!

 On the better side, I went with wifey to watch The Last Samurai.

Wifey went sentimental, I had blood-lust written on my face. This movie ROCKS!

Ok, no samurai can look like Tom Cruise but man the soul of the movie gets to you.

The clash of modern against traditional values is brought to the fore-front in this movie. You identify yourself with the samurai warriors who strive to keep alive their legacy and memories. One of the moving moments of the movie for me was on seeing them moving forward in battle with swords against cannons and rifles. They moved on knowing that what awaits them is certain death.

I don't want to give away the movie so much but just go see it. A bit over-board with the focus on Tom Cruise but then he is one of the producers of the movie.
