Strikers a plenty at MAN United
08.31.04 (6:21 pm)
[image]objectzero_7522684 20.jpg[/image]
Rooney at MAN United. Hooray, hooray!
Rooney is number 8 on the first eleven list of MAN United. Whether or not this will work well for MAN United is yet to be seen. How will this kid fit into the already crowded striker cubicle? I see him as a lone-striker figure, not so much a team player.
MAN United should cut down on the number of strikers in the team. On last count United have got Van Nistelrooy, Saha, Alan Smith, Solskjaer and (now) Rooney. Unless United op for a five man strike force, it doesn't look realistic to have too many strikers.
My 2 cents is that MAN United doesn't need more strikers, it needs defenders. I truly believe that by dropping Jan Stam , Fergusan made a critical error. United at the moment does not have a stopper who would hold the ball in the last quarter of the field. Arsenal for example have Pascal Cygan and Sol Campbell, two of the best centre defenders in my opinion and Chelsea has John Terry. United?
Arsenal for instance allow the same fellas to play day-in-day-out. They read each others play like a bunch of siamese-twins. Their football is a joy to watch. Anybody on the Arsenal team can score. I remember even Cygan scored one last season. And they do it effortlessly.

Happy 47th birthday Malaysia!
Ok, I slept for most of the day. I never manage to complete my list of what-to-dos today. I ended up sleeping in front of the tv while watching an Animal Planet show.
I'm getting pretty bum out with my sis who keeps watching the Akademi Fantasia re-runs. Akademi Fantasia is an American Idol reality-show-clone. Watching the re-runs one time over I can stand but watching the same episode (episode 7) twice in the same day is a bit too much.
It does bring to light our ever growing obsession with reality shows. Reality tv is in most part fake tv. I get more realism from watching documentaries on the mating habits of dung beatles. Reality tv started with the iconic Survivor series. Ironically, the first Survivor series was shot on a malaysian island. Malaysia actually helped kick-started the whole reality series genre when Survivor 1 was shot on Pulau Tiga. Another Malaysia Boleh achievement...hm we also kick-started the illegal-sports-betting industry.
Right now my sis is still watching Akademi Fantasia episode 7. I believe she is secretly in love with the eventual winner - Zahid.
[line] For those who have watched The Village - there's a poll for you on this site. Let me know your opinion on this movie, in the context of whether you liked it or not.
Malaysians win big at the Real Olympics! Read more here. -Thanks Brian for this link, God knows where you found it.

Merdeka Eve
08.29.04 (10:22 pm)
People have been asking me about my celebration plans for Merdeka (Independance)Day. My only thought is to sleep in late and just pig out. Yup, play my PS2, read a book and just nap the whole afternoon. A totally non-productive life-style.
Not that I am non-patriotic just that I'm over saturated by "Medeka". Everywhere I go, there are flags being flown(some without any regards to flag ethics) and any event that is done in the name of the "Merdeka Spirit" is being shown on tv.
By the way what is the "Merdeka Spirit"?
As I watch the scenes around me, I have to wonder whether those that over-display their patriotism really know what it means to be independant. Are we truly independant? As a country we are free to choose our destiny but as an individual are we really free?
I can't help noticing that all these show of patriotism seems to appear around this time every year. What about the rest of the time? By wednesday (1st Sept) not much will be said about the "Merdeka Spirit". No longest run attempts, longest flag display or the occasional tell the toll-collectors-to-stop-c ollecting fiasco. We'll go back to our mundane wage-slave life, living off sub-sidies that the gomen will give out.
By the way, I heard that the gomen of the day will slowly take away its subsidies especially for petrol. This would drive petrol prices up as the gomen down-sizes its spending. Sooner or later we will be totally independant, non-dependant on help from the gomen.
I believe that the "Merdeka Spirit" means to revisit what our fore-fathers had to go through in order to gain Malaysia's Independance. How it took time, effort and careful planning to bring it about in a peaceful manner. It took perseverance and tenacity in order to pursuade the British Empire to allow Malaysia to be a free country.
It is this aptitude that I see missing in the people of today. They lack the tenacity to try new ideas, seek new ventures to improve themselves and open up new opportunities for economic independance.
To be truly free is the em-bodiment of the "Merdeka Spirit". So I'm free to choose what I want to do tomorrow. I'm sleeping in.
Happy Merdeka Day (31st August 2004)

Viva to pillows
08.25.04 (9:51 pm)
The greatest invention was not the wheel but rather the humble pillow. Yup, it wins hands down for the most innovative invention, it has yet to be radically improved upon or changed. A pillow will always be a pillow. It has been the centre of the rise and fall of civilisation as we all know it. Great men were conceived and laid to rest on one.
Right now as I type this in the office I am pining for one. Put a pillow under my head now and I'll be out for a couple of hours.
Currently, I'm waiting for the scanner-pc to convert my Adobe Photoshop file to PNG. I've been scanning photos of the late Jason Eng. I've been en-trusted to come up with a multimedia presentation for his memorial this coming saturday.
I've been shifting through a treasure trove of memories. These images, give me a glimpse into another person's life. Time held captive. Moments frozen as they were lived at that moment in time.
The ones that show a smiling Jason brings me close to tears. That's the man I remember and choose to remember. There are pictures with me in them. Times when I was part of the youth group and he was my leader.
My theme is "A life well lived". I'll show a progression from his childhood days to the last year he was alive. Focusing on what he had done for others and also glimpses of a man who loved his family and friends. I'll aim for a more lively, laughter filled atmosphere cause I am sure he would want it that way.

Daily bragging
08.23.04 (5:49 pm)
I have a pile of paper on my desk. Two weeks of work, finished and un-finished work. It'll probably take me another week to sort out this mess.
Since the Premiership started last week I have been in constant struggle with about 36 other guys at my workplace. There have been long, tense discussions with occasional talk of money and the pressure of managing human resources. It's added stress for most of us especially Mondays and Tuesdays when the results come in...
Results for our Fantasy League Teams.
My team (i emphasize the word MY) currently stand at number 6/36 of the office league and 3/13 on my youth group league. Better I shout about it cause noone would shout for me....
Anyway, I've just sold of Alan Smith(MAN U) and Frank Lampard(Chelsea) in order to get Tierry Henry(ARS. Put him up front with Reyes(ARS) and I have a strike force that will take me through this season. I have severly weaken my mid-field and defence in order to get Henry but I know it is all worth it.
Why on earth would grown men take this game so seriously, you ask?
Bragging rights.
For men, its all about bragging rights. What pleasure does one get from an excessive over-dose of bragging rights? Just the notion that you are better, smarter, quicker than the guy next to you. Not much but it feels great. At least its better than sniffing glue in order to get high.
At times bragging rights get you moving. The urge to have your place in the annals of history drives men to do great things. I believe it put man on the moon, cause the men and women to do business which drives the economy of the world, makes parents proud of any achievement that their children make, makes you save to buy a car so you don't have to walk to work, and many more insane examples that can be traced back to a need to prove one-self.
As a Christian, one should instead brag about what Jesus has done. That's appropriate since all this while we've been living on borrowed time that Jesus won for us on the cross.
Ok, I now have to make a major decision on whether I should try to buy Alan Smith(MAN U) again to place next to Reyes and Henry.

Just Monday - Premiership Hangover
08.22.04 (6:32 pm)
Another monday to start your week. I have gotten into a habit of waking up late on Mondays and strutting into the office half an hour late. I totally put the blame on the Premier League matches that end about 1am on Mondays.
Last night, Arsenal v Middleborough kept me awake with a goal fest. I did miss the fifth goal due to exhaustion but the match was in the bag for Arsenal by the fourth goal. I must admit that the fighting spirit of Arsenal should be emulated.
For starters, any lesser team would have given up after letting in 3 goals. Mind you 2 goals slotted in within a span of a minute. At 3-1, any team would find the going hard. But this is Arsenal, who hit back with 4 more goals to end the tally last night at Arsenal 5 - Middlesborough 3.
Although I am a Man U fan - I admire good football and Arsenal play good flowing football. Which I have not seen from Man U (yet).
Much of last nights revival came about after the Bergkamp stunning goal. To which Henry gave the below statement: Henry lauds veteran Bergkamp Sunday August 22 2004 Arsenal talisman Thierry Henry has hailed Dutch veteran Dennis Bergkamp for his performance in the champions thrilling 5-3 victory over Middlesbrough at Highbury on Sunday.
Would this mean I would go out and buy that funky Arsenal jersey? With thought to the injuries that I would sustain from my fellow MAN U friends, I think not.
Would I get that MAN U credit card offered by Public Bank? I just might apply for it. Then I'll probably buy the Arsenal jersey. I could hear my friend Sharon (die-hard MAN U fan) reving up the chain-saw.

Anger Management
08.19.04 (9:43 pm)
What's the problem with the world?
It's anger management. you step on my toes, I get angry, I step back. You get angry. I blow myself up in your hometown, you burn mine down.
It's all about managing pent up anger. In any conflict that we read about, it always begins with someone doing something (considered) bad to another person. Then it escalates into hell on earth. It happened in a UN Refugee camp, it's happening in Israel, in Iraq and Iran, heck the presidencial candidates are doing it everyday.
Whatever happened to counting to ten before you speak to the other person? Before we reach ten we would have blown the poor guys head off.
In writing this I too am guilty for venting anger at the innocents. I too am guilty of words said that I can't take back, feeling hurt that I can't mend. What I strive for in my daily living is that I watch my actions and listen to my words. Then, at least I won't contribute to the hunger of this emotional monster called anger.
I know for sure that running away from it won't help, didn't help some folks living in a Village or maybe we should try living in an isolated time bubble. Running away in that manner is akin to self-denial on a daily basis.
What's my point here? Lets take time to watch ourselves more in these dark days. Lets not add fuel to the fire. Lets be tolerant with our differences. Our differences are merely skin deep. At the heart of it all we are all the same - human and mortal.

Crashed Nuri Latest
08.16.04 (8:00 pm)
Nuri Crash: 3 dead, 7 safe KUALA LUMPUR: Three Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel were killed when a Nuri helicopter crash-landed 15km from Ba’Kelalan, near the Sarawak border with Kalimantan, on Sunday.
The Nuri with 10 people on board lost contact with ground control at about 2.36pm on Sunday while en route from Miri to Ba’Kelalan. It was found yesterday at a forested area about 1,500m above sea level.[more]
The heli was detected via its emergency beacon. Sad to hear that there people killed but at least some are safe and alive. The government should seriously think of how to make air travel safer for that region. They should look into building roads into the accessible areas rather than relying solely on air-travel.
Hearing all these crashes makes me a bit phobic about getting onto an air-craft. At the end of the year I too will have to get onto a plane to go back to Penang with wifey and Ryan. Before this I'm already phobic about planes. I can't stand take-offs and landings, send the creeps up my spine everytime I have to go through one.
Maybe its me but planes are scary. They are cramp, especially the ones used for domestic flights. I've noticed that for Malaysia Airlines (MAS), the quality of food has cheapen a bit. Probably to cut cost since they (MAS) are loosing money every year.
O well, when you have to fly, you have to fly. This time round I'll take sleeping pills and sleep the flight out.
regards,

RMAF Nuri Chopper Missing
Air Force Nuri 'missing'
Fate of aircraft, 10 servicemen on board unknown; full scale SAR activated
MIRI: A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Nuri helicopter, with 10 servicemen on board, has been reported 'missing somewhere near' Long Seridan while on a mission to resupply the small military detachment at Ba' Kelalan.
Long Seridan is about 30km northeast of the Mulu National Park.
The air force is tight lipped about the report but the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SAC I Abang Wahap Abang Julai, when contacted last night, said he had received a report that the helicopter had 'crashed'.[more]
Nuri crash: One survivor rescued, fate of nine unknown
News Update by The Star News Desk
KOTA KINABALU: One of the 10 military personnel on board a missing Royal Malaysian Air Force Nuri helicopter in the highlands of Sarawak has been airlifted to safety.
The soldier, who has minor injuries, was winched up from the Nuri helicopter at about 12.15pm and has been taken to Miri.
Bad weather is said to be hampering rescue work.[more]
If the above reports are true then this episode came to a happy ending. At least we did not have to wait two weeks to have our loved ones returned to their families.
Some how I believe that the previous SAR should have been conducted by the police and the military in the like manner as the one above. It only took them a day to find the heli. Maybe Malaysia has learnt a lesson from the two weeks SAR fiasco.

NO Bario heli crash pictures!
08.08.04 (6:39 pm)
There's this email that is flying around with so-called pictures of the Bario heli crash. I've seen them and I've found them to be a HOAX. They are not pictures from the Bario crash!
The markings on the heli are wrong, smoke is coming from the wreckage and there is a crowd gathered around it.At least one passenger is a caucasian and the state of the bodies are too fresh. Meaning the pictures were taken within a few hours of the actual crash.
Whoever sent those pictures is totally in-sensitive to the feelings of other people especially the families of the crash victims.
[line] It is incredible what some people would do in order to gain some measure of fame like faking your own beheading. Whatever happened to showing off your stamp-collection?
Personally, I am no fan of going to the hospital. There is something about hospitals that gives me the creeps but after reading this I'm going to avoid one for a long time.
One of my worries has become a reality. Someone has come up with a trojan horse for PDAs. It will not take long for trojan horse writers to come up with one that will attack mobile phones. Most hand-phones nowadays support JAVA applications, this in turn provides a door-way for trojan and virus coders to exploit. I fore-see portable device users facing and having the same problems as the general pc user. This can either expand or stiffle the market for portable devices and wireless network technologies such as GPRS.
Wondering what browser to use on your pc? This article is a good read.

Been messing around with this phone (Nokia 6600) for a week and I'm still smiling.
Spent the best part of this week hunting for themes to install on this phone. I'm currently using the Linux theme which has the cute penquin as a background picture.
Overall, this phone is a joy to use but I must say that the digital video-camera is crap. The pictures pixelate and it fails under low lighting conditions. The digital-still-camera quality is good for a camera-phone but still-pictures tend to be slightly out-of-focus.
Yesterday, I managed to install a complete bible into the phone. I now have no excuse to say I forgot to bring my bible to church service. Plus in the light of what has happened these past week I really feel a need to do some serious soul-searching (meaning of life, etc, etc).

Windows Security Upgrade on Way
By Elyse Ashburn August 5, 2004 7:26PM
Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2 is coming in August. And this time, the company means it. The service pack will make its debut following a string of virus warnings that sent millions of users scrambling for patches. The update, dubbed "SP2," will offer consumers a much-needed computer inoculation.[more]
My 2 Cents: For the fans of this blog (all five or six of you) who use Windows XP, this is my contribution to your ever growing need to upgrade your XP. You can get details on how to download the service pack in this article.
Anyway IBM pledges support for open-source and promises not to assault Linux with patents.
Will that spell doom for open-source once big blue gets its tentacles involve? Whatever it is, it could be good news for Macs. Me thinks that once some big godzilla like corporation gets involve in a free spirit creature like linux, the bars would come down to clamp the creative wisdom of so many people.

After meeting families of the crash victims, the Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Kuala Lumpur at 4pm.RISEAP secretary-general Datuk Mohammad Taha Ariffin said the official opening of the three-day meeting, which began yesterday and ends on Aug 6, was scheduled for 10.30am.abstracted from here.

My 2 cents: Got this little bit of news from a friend. According to this person there are still missing people in the high-lands of Bario. The missing are actually men from the commando teams sent out to search for the heli. I cannot confirm this news from any-one either then this person.
There seems to be a news-blackout concerning Bario as I believe some people want to point our attention else-where. People want to move on from this disaster but I pray that all questions can be answered concerning the running of the whole rescue process.

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 04 August 2004, 08:22 COPYING MUSIC to Apple’s wonderfully designed digital juke box, the Ipod, is illegal in Australia, according to legal experts.

“What we need more than ever today is a concerted effort to initiate inter-faith dialogue,” he said as he made an impassioned plea for religious moderation at the opening of the World Council of Churches meeting here.
Abdullah urged the 150 participants, who included world church leaders, to join him in calling upon people of all faiths to work together for peace and justice.[more]

KUCHING – The State intends to acquire high-tech equipment to facilitate search-and- rescue (SAR) operations , said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam yesterday. He said that although the deployment of high-tech devices such as the American Navy Orion PC 3 aircraft was expensive, it would be the most effective for the state’s rugged terrain and jungles.[more]

Fed govt open to suggestions
... on improving future SAR ops
KUCHING: The helicopter crash at the foot of Mt. Murud in northern Sarawak, killing all seven people on board on July 12, should be a crucial lesson to learn from by the government in handling such disaster, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Datuk Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili. One most important lesson to learn would concern the high technology equipment used in handling such disaster, he added.[more]

Results of post-mortem yet to be announced
KUCHING: The authorities are yet to announce the outcome of the post-mortem on the victims of the July 12 helicopter crash.
"I've not received any official reports on the post mortem," Dr. Yao Sik King, the new director of the Sarawak Health Department, told reporters yesterday.[more]
My 2 cents: how many deaths must it take before they start thinking about investing money into equipment to save lives? This is so malaysian, unless something happens; only then will we act upon it. In this case it took seven lives for them to realize that we need to set-up proper rescue teams, rescue procedures and guidelines to handle rescue efforts. Once again cost will be an issue here, we just love to look at the dollars and cents. [line] Porn Blogs Manipulate Google
When Google bought blogging software pioneer Blogger last year, it probably didn't expect that its new technology would be used to goose the page rankings of porn sites.
But that's exactly what's happening, as an outfit called CyberQuest has recently set up a few dozen cross-linked, porn-themed Blogspot blogs (powered by Blogger), all of which link to three of its for-profit porn sites. According to a couple of experienced bloggers, the purpose behind the cross-linking strategy is to artificially raise the Google rankings of the three porn sites.[more]

"Rick," a 20-year-old Krispy Kreme employee from Washington, says he has a serious problem: He masturbates.
He recently befriended several other Christian men who share his belief that masturbation is sinful, and together they've pledged not to "defile themselves" for 40 days -- the same amount of time the Bible says Satan tempted Jesus in the desert. They encourage each other to remain steadfast by e-mail and instant messages.[more]

WHO is accountable?
08.02.04 (9:01 pm)
I am wondering as why over 10,000 people involved in the Search & Rescue Operation failed to comb Pa Lungan area even after 16 days when it took only about 3 hours walk from Bario. The local folks at Pa lungan saw the ill-fated helicopter in the area while folks at Long Rapung did not heard the passing helicopter. So the area to be combed should be La Lungan region and radius of the same. The logical explanation is that the Search & Rescue Team failed to comb the La Lungan region at all. With night vision goggles, telescope and sophiscated helicopters, they all failed. But thanked be to God, that Capt. Thomas Lim spoted the wreckage with naked eyes. Why was Capt Thomas Lim or those experienced pilots who fly in the area were not permitted to involve in the search & rescue? How long were the 2 persons namely Dr. Judson & Mr. Roger Wong's bodies were intact, died less than 5 days ago in speculation? What is the Post Mortem report of these 2 persons who were intact? The Head of Rescue Operations should be accountable for these failed operation and spent millions for nothing.... May God bless the families of the loss and may the souls of the 7 deceased rest in peace. Thank you - comment left by "newbie" on Saturday 07.31.04 - 4:34 am.
"newbie" or whoever you are, I too have questions left un-answered.
Why did they fly at all since the weather was bad? Why weren't the police in charge from the beginning? The heli was over-weight (2 packs of rice on board), why not abort the flight? Why didn't the SARs team follow-up on the program list faxed in by Roger Wong's personal assistant? Even if all died at impact, why did it take so long to find them when you've got the latest in technology flying the skies of Bario? etc, etc, etc
Some questions will never be answered but what is certain the accident happened and they all died. We who are left behind,to the best of our abilities, must do them justice by seeking the truth as to why they died.
The DCA were asked to finish up a report in a months' time. To me that is un-realistic. To meet the dead-line they could just throw us a "bad weather scenario" reason.

POPPING VITAMINS WON’T HELP HEART
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Popping vitamin pills won’t help ward off heart disease, according to an American Heart Association science advisory.
Researchers analyzed the role vitamin supplements play in reducing the oxidative stress thought to play a part in heart disease. After analyzing previous studies on the topic, researchers could not find enough evidence in the studies to recommend taking vitamin supplements to treat or prevent heart attacks or strokes. [more]

REMAINS OF CRASH VICTIMS HANDED OVER TO FAMILIES

I stood and watched as they lowered my friend to his final resting place.
The night before I lead the singing of hymns at the service in his house and played guitar during his funeral service. It is the least I can do for Jason Eng. I did not cry until the time I walked passed his casket to pay my final respects.
I touched his casket and said "Goodbye old friend".
What else can I say.
I still cannot seem (along with other close friends) to accept the fact that I won't see him again. He was one of those people that leaves an impression the moment you meet him. I know he has all the years that I've known him.
At least I know he met my son Ryan the day after he was born when he visited the hospital. He told me that my life would never be the same again. He was right in many ways. Both with the birth of my son and the death of my friend.
GOD bless.
