National Day Eve
08.30.05 (5:12 am)
It's National Day eve and I'm sitting at home.
Yup, my siblings are out on the town, probably watching the fireworks. Me, I'm at home watching my two favourite show; CSI:NY and House MD.
Wifey is upset about something but I can't make it out so I've been watching those shows alone. She'll tell me eventually, till then I'm staying out of her way.
I paid up in full for the iBook and with my most puppylish face; asked the guy to speed up the ordering. The fastest that they can deliver is a week but he can't give me a guarantee on that. So I'll keep it at two weeks and if it comes in early; then thats a bonus.
Today I've also been kept busy watching lelong.com.my, the best Malaysian auction site to date. Anyway, I've been a member since 2000 and I just love it to bits.
Why?
You'll find anything here. What interests me most are the watches. Yup, I have a thing for watches and wallets.
Wallets, cause it makes the man, you can always tell the social and economical stature of a man by the state of his wallet.
Watches just stems from my facination with time. Much like Einstein, I too see time as an element that can be bent and shaped. You can always nick time when you need more and well stretch it when you need less. I believe that there is a time for everything, just that you need to know when that moment will collide with you being in the right place. Most of the time, I'm in the right place at the wrong time. Some people call that "bad luck".
So just maybe I'll buy a new watch just to remind me that tomorrow, 31st August 2005, Malaysia turns 48.

Exhausted
08.29.05 (3:42 am)
I'm back from a team building program.
I'm dead exhausted and have a slight temperature. Managed to fight the flu but I think I'm coming down with a fever.
I'm still an anti-Mawi club member. I've been hearing his song "Seroja" being sung in the guys bathing area during my team building program.
At least Marsha and Felix are going to act in their own tele-movie soon, while Mawi spends all his prize money...

Ok, I'm probably the only non-Mawi fan in the office.
Mawi was the winner for AF3; the biggest singing reality show in Malaysia. The cash-cow who generated millions of ringgit in revenue for cable provider Astro. I believe that the only people who won was Astro.
I believed that there were better singers in the competition that deserved to win or at least go into the finals.
I've counted, there are now three (3) non-Mawi fans in the office.

iBook...oh...iBook
08.23.05 (1:46 pm)
Two weeks wait...
I've called up the company, the official company that distributes Apple computers in my city. I can get an educational rebate cause I work at the univesiti by showing them a letter from management that I work in the uni. Ok, today I've got to chase those HR fellas.
I'll need to submit the letter and pay (at least 30%) a deposit for the iBook at their office.
I'm in luck, they have available stock but .....sound of Darth Vader's heavy breathing over the phone I'll have to wait two(2) weeks for it to arrive.
TWO WEEKS!
I might as well fly into Kuala Lumpur and purchase it there...
I wonder will I make it as a Desperate Techno Husbands. Husbands who crave technology toys more than anything else, who live in Silicon Valley and thinks Bill Gates is head of the UN.
I'll just wait...

Back to School
08.22.05 (9:02 pm)
Today, I went back to class...
Nothing major, I just sat in for a photography class. A friend invited me to sit in his class when I was free. This week he was wrapping up the technical side of photography and in two weeks time he will start on the artistic side of it. I'm more interested in the artistic side since I lack training in that area, my pictures are a mess from an artistic view.
Today was a great experience because I was attending something that I was really interested in. It came to life for me, it was not a drag and it kept me logged in for a good 2 hours. I remember falling asleep in class right after the 30 minute mark.
Yup, I was not really a star student in my younger days. In my school year book, under my class photo, my caption read "Usually sleeps during Additional Maths class...". I kid you not.

The Writers Block
08.20.05 (6:56 pm)
I've too many ideas not enough time.
Had lunch with 3 writers. It's amazing to actually have conversation with people who have the same passion as you do. There we were, a journalist, a book writer, a blogger and yours truly; struggling wannabe writer and stressed out father.
Its great to talk about writing forms, topics and writing style. To know that at times we all have the same struggles.
It has given me encouragement to really finish off my book. To get it out while the iron is still hot or at least while I am still in an upward mood. To pen my ideas, dreams, frustrations and imaginations onto a canvas that the world would learn to appreciate.
At least I can say I've done it, been there; even if I don't make any money out of it. I would have moved myself from the land of mere talk to the up-market Writers Block.
Sigh, I'm having a Hallmark moment now.

My Dead Nokia 6800
08.20.05 (5:34 am)
My favourite Nokia phone is dead.
To keep my lovely son Ryan quiet, I passed him my handphone. He gave it a bite and followed up with a healthy dose of his drool. In one swift move he shorted out my keypad and turned my handphone into a paper weight.
My precious Nokia 6800.
This is the phone that got 5 stars at geek.com.Probably the only phone, ever, that had a perfectly intergrated QWERTY keyboard.
So I went out and got myself a Samsung handphone (SGH E640). One that has 262144K colours, 1.3MB digital camera with flash, 10MB internal memory and GPRS. To be honest, i didn't really read the features of this phone. I just turned up at my friends shop, told her I wanted a phone with at least bluetooth. I was shown a couple of Nokia phones but was not really impressed and then she pointed out the Samsung E640.
What won me over was the screen. Fantastic screen, the Koreans must be nuts to fit a LCD screen on a handphone but I'm not complaining. Makes me wonder why Nokia does not use LCD screens on their phones?
Oh, next week; I'm getting an iBook.

Sunday Book Shopping
08.13.05 (10:17 pm)
I buy books on Sunday.
For some weird freak of universal timing, I tend to buy my books on Sunday. Today alone I bought two more books to add to my queue of half read books that I've got lying around at home.
I've a collection of books by Donald Trump, at least two books on the poetry of Robert Frost, a Sir Arthur Canon Doyle - Sherlock Holmes collection; including works by his grandson, a host of bible commentories and stuff ranging from dinosaurs to the stock market.
My dad has his own collection which he keeps neatly in book cabinets. Mine? Well, I've got them all over the place. Primarily in locations where I can have easy access to them - top of my bed, next to my computer, outside the toilet, in my car, briefcase, etc, etc.
So next week, after church, I'm staying away from eating outlets that are near bookshops...and DVD shops.

Hazy Mornings
08.12.05 (2:14 pm)

Image above extracted from screenshots: jeffooi.com
The haze is back.
This week malaysia has had a tsunami of haze hitting some of its major cities. Where I live the haze is visible but at livable standards. Its expected that at the end of August when the trade winds go into reverse, the island of Borneo will be hit hard.
You can get the latest Air Pollutant Index (API) readings here.
Some observations:
Most international news agencies were not reporting the haze issue...we're not that important to warrant a mention. But the AFP did declare the state of emergency for Malaysia, six (6) hours before the official announcement.
Prices of face-mask have hit the roof.
Prices of mineral water will follow suit.
Price of fish will go up (again) because some ports were closed and most fishermen did not go to sea due to high cost for diesel.
The electricity company in Malaysia will report high profits.
Air-conditioning providers will be have higher profits due to high demands for their units.
The Department of Environment website system is so open for defacement, the webmaster should be shot....
So, golf anyone?

GraduEdit
GraduEdit is the only online service to offer editing exclusively by currently enrolled Ivy League doctoral candidates (i.e. graduate students working towards their Ph.D.'s and equivalent degrees at top American universities such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton).
A venture by a friend of mine which I think is going to be big.

Seeking Notebook woes
08.09.05 (5:10 pm)
Looking for a good notebook is painful.
My heart is set on an Apple iBook, since I'm a Mac user. But budget and pricing has lowered my gaze to the lower end of the spectrum. Yes, to the Intel based notebooks.
Now it has settled onto IBM Thinkpads. They are sturdy machines and refurbished ones do come in under RM1000 (USD300).
I'm kicking myself for not buying an iBook when I actually had the funds.
Well, the search continues for this struggling writer, photographer and commenter of everyday life...lifetime blogger.

Notebook Headache
08.08.05 (11:26 pm)
It's so hard to find a good deal on a notebook.
For starters, I'm going on a tight budget. So obviously I am going on the pre-owned path (used). Plus, I'm looking for the hottest pre-owned product on the internet - iBooks.
I've had a few mis-hits on eBay even a case of winiing a bid only to find out that the seller was a con artist. The bidding war for iBooks on eBay is not for the faint hearted. The last hour of any bid can up your stress level to heart-attack zone. For the final stretch I turn to eSnipe.
eSnipe is a handy little tool that does the bidding for me. Its like your personal sniper, whom you command to take the shot at the last second possible.
Right now I've given up (for the moment) on eBay and have gone hunting for refurbished or pre-own websites.
I just need a notebook to work on my book while I'm on the move. Nothing powerful, just enough to handle word documents.
So for anyone out there that has an iBook lying around that you're not using, I'm interested - email me.

Long weekend
08.06.05 (11:35 pm)
Its another long weekend for me.
Ryan woke us up again at 3 am. My theory is that because he plays too much in the day, he gets nightmares at night. My mum-in-law has told us not to allow him to play too much. Anyway, we have to weather this one out.
I've been busy with church matters this weekend. This has been going on for the past few weeks. A friend has adviced me to let go of some church duties as I am in a danger of burning-out. I'm taking his advice seriously and will act upon it.
I've told myself to start working on chapter 1 of my book. I need to strike the iron while its hot, in my case that better be soon. I've already found a friend who agreed to be my editor. So I'll be emailing him my book in pieces. If he understands what I'm writing about then my book will be a hit...
So I'm off to evening service. God bless.

Ryan woke me up several times last night.
I need sleep. Louds of sleep. But I'm too busy today, I've no weekend at all.
I'm now bidding for an Apple G3 iBook. Trying to bring it in for less than RM1000 (USD380). Keeping my fingers cross.

For Sale: Nokia 9300
08.04.05 (11:31 pm)

I need to fund my book project so I'm letting go of my Nokia 9300 (preview). It is a warranty set and is less then 4 months old. Minor scratches on the outside phone-screen. It comes with a 128MB MMC card. I'll throw in an original Nokia leather pouch (free) and the box.
I'm opening this up to friends, especially those in Malaysia. After that it might end up back at my friends shop, eBay or lelong.com.my.

Paypal crisis
08.04.05 (9:06 pm)
Only in Malaysia, PayPal money needs to be withdrawn to an American account.
I'm currently actively involved in an online discussion with the eBay community concerning PayPal. Though Malaysia is recognised by PayPal, we cannot withdraw our money into a Malaysian account. We can only do withdrawals to an American account.
In the long run this will kill off the ability of the 44 odd Malaysian eBayers to do online commerce. That's 44 potential online millionaires, marketing Malaysian goods in cyberspace.
So PayPal, (I know this will be googled), do something about this!

Another idea for a book
08.03.05 (3:20 pm)
Just to let you all know, I'm also ding-donging an idea for a personal finance book but catered to those that have totally no finance-sense (like yours truly) and for those that struggle to meet ends meet (like yours truly).
How bout another idea, a book on how to bull-shit your way to the top and make money while at it. Much like the AP issue which Rafidah is avoiding.
The Malaysian economy is in the hands of people who merely look out for themselves while saying they are looking out for others.

I need an editor
08.03.05 (3:07 pm)
I've taken a step closer in writing my book, by finishing off the framework yesterday evening. The framework is still draft as I know I will change it as new ideas come along.
Rather then address designing issue for developing a website, I've decided to focus it down to just the planning phase of developing a website.
I've seen people attend courses on how to use a HTML editor and read books on coding HTML or designing web-pages but none on planning a website. It is probably one of the most under-looked areas of website development.
I'm still lining up my thoughts but my plan is to have a draft by end of the month.
I'm need an editor but on a favor basis since I can't pay you. But what I can promise you is that you'll be mentioned in the book. So if you're interested in helping out a up-and-coming writer please email me.
If you have suggestions or experiences in setting up a website which you care to share, do email me and I'll see if I can include it in the book.
Hopefully, I don't sleep again during lunch...

Sleeping on the job
08.02.05 (8:13 pm)
I've resorted to sleeping during my lunch break today.
Ryan woke me up at 5.30am today and proceeded to play. We had some quality time together this morning, though I was half asleep, watching a decommentary on Megalightning on Discovery Channel.
Ryan has taken to climbing, something that I and my siblings did not do when we were his age. My mum commented that whatever we did not do then has fallen over to Ryan. Unlike me, Ryan does not seem to have a fear of heights. Me? I can't even get up a tree.
I've started on a book which I hope to finish by the end of the month. Right now, I'm still at the planning stage. The idea is there, just that I need to crystalize it on paper.
Oh, the haze is back.

Malaysian Airlines Plane Plunge
08.01.05 (8:11 pm)
Plane plunge panics passengers. Thanks screenshots for the heads up.
My dad was on the flight to Perth but from Kuala Lumpur-Singapore-Perth yesterday evening. This plane was on-route to Kuala Lumpur from Perth; so it could've been the same plane on its return leg.
My heart miss a beat when I read the headlines. Its my dad's first trip to Australia and I'm glad no harm has been done unto him.
Will watch the news today for any reports on this.
